On November 11 2013 there are stats which shows the amount of aid of each country has given to the Philippines for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. If we link the amount of GDP those countries has we will get this:

14 trillion
United Kingdom
16.1 million

China
100,000
7 trillion

It is curious to why China, being one of the strongest country in regards to GDP at 7 million, has provided 100,000 US dollars. Even the the Vatican being one smallest countries in existence has contributed 50,000 US dollars more than China. It may be possible that China may have some rancor with the Philippines due to the recent conflict on the Spratly Islands. However, countries such as the United Stats, having the highest GDP on the list, has contributed the most to the recuperation of the Philippines not only because of the alliance between the two countries but also because of the United State's past and present relations such as trade between the countries and the previous occupation in the Philippines.

Typhoon Haiyan - Disaster Reflection

Devastating the central of the Philippine islands, the super typhoon has become one of the most destructive natural events that has struck the Philippines. It is very depressing to see such sadness among those who have been affected. I can only imagine the horrifying experiences that those who were harmed during this disaster. Hopefully the Filipino community as well as the international community will be able to unite together to help our fellow people during the time of need.

As a response to the super typhoon, the people around the world or even the smallest communities should be able to contribute to the aid of those affected. Brent International School Manila among with other schools and organizations such as British International School, ABS-CBN, GMA, etc. have already contributed to the effort. Even the smallest contribution by even a single person can support the aid to re-building the community that has been greatly damaged. In future disasters, hopefully none of this intense level will occur again, people might be able to prepare with facilities where the local community gathers and braces for the rest of the disaster. Obviously, the facilities can't be a normal building but it should be specially made for Mainstream natural disasters that occasionally occur. If the area are prone to tsunamis, there should be an emergency evacuating center where people can be moved to a safer place but if there isn't anytime there should be a building of some sort which can withstand a high level disaster. For areas that are prone to strong winds or typhoons, there should be a specially made building that can protect people from the disasters.

Some people, especially in areas with large disparities, are unable to afford  proper housing. Taking Philippines as an example, typhoon Yolanda struck areas where housing is poor and protection is minimal. Even in areas where housing is decent, the cost of building an incredibly strong house that could protect from Yolanda would probably cost a fortune. On the other hand, even if a small typhoon or natural disaster would present it's self, people still live in vulnerable areas probably because the area fits the people's income or the people can not live anywhere else but there.
